That is small enough to use as surrounds. I'm liking where this is going and the BB boxes would lighten them up also. I'll be looking at them in February as my annual spring build more speakers project rolls. Hopefully they will be available by then so thanks for the stats.
Well it's football season now ... as posted earlier I'm itching for 4 HTM-8's for my side/rear surrounds, just installed 4 Volt-10's for the ceiling Atmos.
That's all in Erich's hands now, the design work has been done for months and I even built some assembled crossovers for those a while back. Not sure what the current hold up is preventing them from being listed. I have the HTM-10 MTM/Center channel that I am working on but didn't really like the 2-way crossover I tried as it left the vertical dispersion (or horizontal as a center) far too narrow before getting a cancelation between the woofers, good to only +-10 degrees or so. I am going to try a 2.5 way crossover to see if that helps. If it doesn't the HTM-10 Center design might not happen.
Thanks Matt! Reseaching options and curious what your thoughts would be for a dedicated theater room. Room is 10' 11" x 15' 7" with 10' ceilings. Would you recommend the HTM-10 or HTM-12? I assume the Titans would be overkill, but what do you think?
I agree the Titans would be overkill. If you have the room and don't mind the extra cost I would go for the HTM-12's so you aren't second guessing your decision. But you are trying to stick to a budget I am sure the HTM-10's would be more then adequate for a room that size and there isn't a huge jump in sound between those two models.
I was leaning towards the HTM-12, so thanks for confirming. Planning to have a 14" deep false wall, so yes, I'll have the room.
Matt, assuming the HTM-12 is placed in its normal position (waveguide over woofer), how many degrees above and below the waveguide would you say you can move vertically and still be near optimal? Thanks for your help!
It should be more then 15 degrees above/below without much change to the response or sound; slightly better coverage below then above. If two rows of seating are involved I recommend placing speaker so that the ear level at the rear row is even with the top of the cabinet and if there are three rows the speaker should be placed so that ear level at the middle row end up between the bottom of the waveguide and the top of the woofer.

I have a couple more questions if you don’t mind. 1- did you take the response measurements early in this thread in a full baffle wall or were they free standing? 2- you mentioned that you added a little BSC. What frequency does it begin? The reason I ask is that I plan to build a partial baffle wall or baffle plate around each HTM-12 approximately 38 inches wide. From your plots it looks like BSC might kick in around 175hz which could make this setup a good compromise between a full baffle wall and free standing on stands. The on axis HTM-10 and HTM-12 measurements are in a baffle wall, the HTM-6 is not. BSC begins around 200hz for the HTM-10 and HTM-12.
I find it rather odd--the only surround for the HTM series is gone. The past 3 months have been very chaotic with very little information so I'm moving to other plan B designs. I initially thought the point of the HTM series was to use the same compression driver for all your speakers as a timbre concept, now with a lack of HTM-6//HTM-8 for surrounds, my concept was wrong. Erich did say on Jan 10th there was going to be a real update with a timeline for the year so once that gets posted, hopeully it will clear up the confusion.
The HTM-6 has been up for over a year. Unfortunately it rarely gets ordered and is probably the least ordered speaker on the site other than the Ares (Ares has only been ordered 3 times in over a year). When I get a kit made up I usually buy enough stuff for 10-20 kits. The cabinet company lets me get 10-20 flat packs as 'samples' on the first run before I need to order 100 or so for an 'official' run. At the rate the HTM-6 gets ordered, 100 flat packs will be sitting for 8-10 years. My guess is that the kit is too expensive for it's size due to the big compression driver and neo magnet woofer. It was priced at $185 and there was barely enough to cover "free shipping". Eminence raised their prices on those woofers which means it would have to go up even higher. I was debating if more parts should be ordered so it was taken down until a decision is made. All of the Eminence woofers have gone up in price, especially the neo magnet models. Some have gone up $20 or more. So there will be a cheaper line of HTM's made up using woofers that don't have the neo magnets. A 6" model will be done using a cheaper 6" woofer. I think they'll be called HT's and will be sold along side the more expensive HTM's.
Thanks for the reply, This is my "surround year" and I was thinking of using HTMs as surrounds speakers with the HTM-6 as the sides and the HTM 8 for "elevation" Atmos speakers. I have ceiling fans so the wall/ceiling junction Atmos will work. Sad to hear that the HTM-6 is gone, figured they would be very popular with the HTM series as a surround--kind of the point of the HTM series from what I understand. For me, I have to build custom cabinets for surrounds anyway so never thought of the flatpacks. Your other option is to offer the HTM-6 without a flatpack option--I have no idea how many flatpacks people purchase so my crystal ball is cloudy. Then again, how many people would rather have the HTM-8 when it becomes available. Thanks for the update.
I'm not sure it's gone forever, just deciding if I should get more parts for it. I think another reason the HTM-6 doesn't get ordered very often is because people build the Volts for surrounds instead.
I can see the HTM-8 and 6 working well together--with the Fusion 8 being gone they are about the only high efficiency option left (that uses compression drivers) Checked the Alphalite 6.5 and Eminence gives the power handling when crossing at 80Hz in the 75 watt range--great for AVRs but not ideal for powerful amps for surround duty to back up the HTM-12. I could see where something like the Volt 8 or HTM 8 would be preferred for surrounds with outboard amplifiers. Another option would to use he 70x70 degree horn from the upcoming HTM center channel with the HTM 6 midwofer for a wider dispersion surround option. Having the stock waveguide dispersion for Atmos is a no-go thhere so maybe the 70 degree hon would work bette as a true surround specfic speaker. Just a few thouhts, lookin forward to the timeline for upcoing releases--spring is coming and my woodshop is ready.
Dang, that's too bad. I'm going to be placing my order soon and wanted 3 x HTM-12 and 8 x HTM-6 or 8.
@Matt Grant Hello! I'm currently building a pair of HTM-12's and had a question about insulation. I purchased ultratouch R19 denim insulation which says 5.5" thick on the specs but then I saw in post #2 of this thread where you mention the material should be 2-3" thick. I looked up the specs of the other sizes online and saw that R6.7 = 1.6" thick and R13 = 3.5" thick, both of which are outside the range you mentioned. Do you remember what thickness of the ultratouch you went with when you built these?
@Erich H So is the HTM-8 still a go? Or will that now be pushed down to an HT-8 using woofers that don't have the neo magnets?
I have a question regarding HTM-12 vs Cinema-10. What would be the advantages/disadvantages for each system? Benefits of one over the other? They will be going in a large open room behind an AT screen. The room will have 3 tiers of seating.
Either will work, just use more of the R6.7 (cover the back/sides/top) or less of the R13 (just the back/bit on the sides).
