Tempest or Zephyr?

  1. Looking into doing a DIY kit with either the tempest or zephyr and hoping for some direction from anyone who's heard both to compare?

Basically trying to see in general which is considered to be the sonically superior design. I know the tempest is liked alot and has many reviews but Theres not so much for the zephyr.

I know the zephyr woofer technically is the superior driver with lower distortion and better low end range. The 12a is also known for the "kick" in the 100hz-300hz range is my impression. One thing id wonder in regards to that is if its a driver specific thing, or if it could simply be added or removed via an eq in the frequency range.

I'm specifically just trying to attain the best clarity characteristics possible, and a great midrange.

I'm also wondering if anyone knows the port tunings? I was planning on going a more custom route with a 40" or so floor standing design. I was modeling them both up in WinISD with 3-3.5 cubic foot enclosures with 30-40hz tunings. Trying to get extension into the mid 30's or so for full range operation

  2. If you can try and PM Jeff Bagby over on the Parts Express Tech Talk forums, He designed both speakers and would be best able to answer you questions about the two.

You should be able to add in the kick in the 100-300hz range through EQ. Placing the 4012HO in a smaller enclosure to match the transfer function of the Delta Pro should also do the same thing.

I would also say the Zephyr should have a better clarity and midrange then the Tempest.

A 3cuft enclosure for the Zephyr with a 40hz tune should dig pretty low, I'd expect decent extension into the mid 30's from that.

  3. I actually was able to pm Jeff there already, helped my out with some comparative info!

I've decided for my application to go zephyr :)
