Can I effectively cross the SEOS-12 at 900 Hz or should I wait for the SEOS-15. It will use the DNA360 CD. I want to pair the SEOS with a JBL LE14H-3 and will be using a modified Econowave crossover developed on AK. Any thoughts. Oh yeah, this is my first post here. Great projects and designs. BHamm
950Hz is the minimum recommended for the SEOS-12. The DNA360 has a frequency response of 950Hz to 19,000Hz with a recommended crossover of 1,000Hz or above. That combination just isn't designed to crossover as low as 900Hz, but if you can work with it being in the 1,000-1,200Hz range you might be able to work with them. The SEOS-15 gives you some more wiggle room with a recommended crossover point of 850Hz, but you would need to pair it with a different compression driver. The BA-750 can crossover as low as 500Hz, but it's also almost double the cost and currently very limited availability (out of stock right now).
I really don't want to splurge on more expensive drivers (yet). I have looked at the BMS 4550, but too much for now. I am hoping the DNA360 or DE250 will play nicely just under their recommended x-over point. The JBL will not go higher. BHamm
I ordered the SEOS-12s and crossover parts. I will order the DNA360s soon and will get this project playing. I hope to measure the results for fine tuning, also. BHamm
There is no real limit on how low you can cross the DNA-360, if the levels are low enough you could run it without a crossover at all without damaging it though I don't really recommend that. Lower crossover points require greater displacement so the diaphragm needs to move further for a given output compared to higher frequencies. The diaphragms in compression drivers really are not meant to move much at all (xmax is often a fraction of a mm) so distortion will increase with the increase in excursion. The extra excursion also puts more mechanical stress on the diaphragm's suspension and it could wear out and break if used at very high levels for extended periods. A lower crossover also means the CD has a larger share of the program material and must dissipate more power, not really a big deal if it is being used at lower levels but it can be if you are pushing 120 dB. That said I have used the DNA-350 crossed at 950hz in my synergy horns and really pushed them a few times (for short bursts) and they held up fine.
Seems like ill be fine at 900 Hz, although I wanted to use the SEOS-15 WG. When they become available, ill buy a pair for comparison to the SEOS-12. I've read so many good things about the DE250 and now the DNA360, I have faith they will operate superbly even just below their rated limits. I really need to buy the equipment for measuring. I don't fully trust my hearing, especially if its something I put together.
