I'm looking for help selecting the best driver/kit for my DIY ceiling speaker project similar to the JBL CONTROL 328C speakers. During construction, I roughed in two 0.6 cuft MDF enclosures above the drywall. The plan is to flush mount a custom baffle with the speakers then cover with a grill. If needed, I can angle the speakers slightly to provide a quasi-crossfire arrangement. The design goal is to take advantage of improved and consistent directivity to minimize early reflections in the reflective kitchen room and widen the stereo sweet spot. The speakers will be used for music listening primarily. Ideally, a sub wouldn't be needed, but it's an option. The volt series coaxials seem like one option, either the 8 or even 10 will fit. Alternately, the Fusion-6 would fit. Any suggestions?
Here's information on the JBL Control 328C for reference. http://www.jblpro.com/ProductAttachments/JBL_Ctrl328C_CT.v1.pdf http://www.adorama.com/images/300x300/JBLC328C.jpg Help me beat the over priced, under performing ceiling speakers that are so common.
I would recommend the volts for this, the coaxial design will give you even coverage no matter which direction you are from the speaker. The Volt-10 works IB so it is good for in wall/ceiling use but you did say you have already built some enclosures into the ceiling. The V-10 will work sealed in the volume you have available while the V-8 should be ported and tuned to around 60hz (a single 2.5" diameter x 4" long port would work or a pair of 1.75" ports also at 4" long). The volt-8 will extend to about 60hz in that configuration while the volt-10 will roll off around 80hz.
I ended buying the V-8 angle surround kit. Amazingly, the baffle fits my pre-made ceiling enclosure perfectly, so I'm considering using it with the oval ports supplied. Do you or anyone know the box volume for which they were tuned? If different than above, might I be able to adjust the port length to make it work?
