Foam HOM killers

    I have been lurking for some time here/AVS and have decided to build a SEOS12/12" woofer. I have not decided on what woofer yet.


    I found a solution for de-HOMming another WG/horn project a while back.
    There are foam windshields in various sizes for fine microphones that do exactly what the GedLee reticulated foam does. In the case of the SEOS, using one only puts a plug at the throat where the greatest chance for aggrevation exists. They are even available in decorator colors! Here is a good for instance:

    I think that this solution keeps the SEOS pretty, protects the driver and has a sonic advantage. There are many versions on the market. No legal issues with Earl either.......... If you have more than average HOMs, you can fill the void in the shields with more foam, wool, polyester cotton, steel wool, whatever - it stays pretty.


    If the woofer had a phase plug...............

    Do you have more specific examples? Can you confirm that it is open cell reticulated foam? I'd like to see some measurements and listening impressions. It definitely looks like a cheap option although it doesn't provide a full plug.

    As soon as Erich will ship to Europe I can get started on the SEOS project. Then I can provide anything that Arta can output for measurements. It is open cell reticulated foam. That is how it blocks the wind without wiping the microphones ability to record the highest frequencies. I do have some measurements in the other direction however (recording white noise with and without the screen) if that is of any help. Probably not much help though as the acoustic pressure at the driver is a lot higher than at a microphone

    That is pretty much it, but that is likely not enough. Geddes uses 30ppi reticulated foam which is generally used for aquarium filtration.

    Does the whole waveguide need to be covered like I've see the geedee's or could the foam be placed down into the throat closer to the cd exit? Sorry about my out loud brainstorming.

    google reticulated speaker foam (IIRC) and you can get big sheets of it for not much more.

    Foam in the throat is probably the best place for it, but ideally you fill the whole thing

    you can do that with layers of the sheet material

    Is there a good place to find more info on this?


    I feel there is some "honk" to my speakers and want to take it down if possible.
